Barcelonesa trains the team that will lead the new sustainability strategy.

The Challenge

Barcelonesa was developing for the first time a corporate sustainability strategy and carrying out, with external support, a comprehensive analysis of its Risks, Opportunities and a map of the impact of new emerging regulations applicable to its company in the following fiscal years.

The company faced the challenge of adequately training its sustainability team, responsible for leading the deployment of the strategy and sustainable practices throughout the organization. Laura Gonzáles, marketing specialist and sustainability champion, led this working group made up of six key members of Functional Areas and recognized that to ensure the success of the project, it was essential that the team could speak the same language and strengthen their leadership skills and knowledge of regulations to implement the strategy effectively.

Although a comprehensive understanding of sustainability was necessary, each area had specific needs that needed to be met. Furthermore, training could be seen as an additional burden and Laura feared internal resistance and she had no budget of her own.

It was vital that the training was flexible so as not to overburden participants, with relevant content for Quality, Safety, Health and Environment, HR, Supply Chain profiles and support for internal sales.

The Solution

To address the challenge of properly training its sustainability team, Barcelonesa chose to participate in the Skills4Impact program: Building Leadership for Sustainable Transformation alongside other companies with similar challenges.

This comprehensive and multidisciplinary program was specifically designed to help teams acquire essential sustainability skills through a hybrid approach that combines online training with a face-to-face Bootcamp. The 9-week program provides theoretical knowledge, practical tools and individual mentoring sessions with Experts from different Functional areas, thus allowing participants to apply directly in their role.

With the support of the Skills4Impact team in internal sales meetings, the initiative was sponsored by its Business Transformation & Organization Manager and supported by its People and Culture Director for the management of registrations and FUNDAE bonus.

The Results & Impact

At an individual level: At the end of the program, the six team members acquired a deep understanding of sustainability. The participants evaluated their overall satisfaction at **9.2/10** and highlighted the quality of the content and the trainers.

At an organizational level: As part of the process, they applied Design Thinking to develop an idea that allows them to transfer the learnings and begin to integrate Sustainability into the organization's culture and made two internal presentations to consolidate the idea in the six months following the end of the program.

We are a team of six people who work in different areas of the company and we wanted this training to be the excuse to, on the one hand, train ourselves and learn a little more about sustainability and, above all, to be aligned. I think that the training has been very useful for all team members to have the same vision of what sustainability is from a much more holistic and broader perspective than we knew it before.
